Aquaman and why he is so awesome

I've been hearing some disturbing rumours, apparently not everyone loves Aquaman, they think he is 'stupid' that his powers are 'rubbish'. Well my friends you couldn't be more wrong. He is amazing, not only in terms of powers, but also character and artwork. You can trust me, just read his New 52 (or is it just 52 yet? When does it stop being new?) series, beautiful. You cant say your not impressed with his first appearance in issue one,  or his mind blitzing entrance in Justice league.
First, his powers and how awesome they actually are. Which of us wouldn't love to breath underwater, to swim faster than you can imagine. Then there are also the points people always forget, that Aquaman is actually incredibly strong, he is tougher than most people realise. After all  the pressure at the bottom of the ocean is immense, and to survive there Aquaman has to be staggeringly tough, which he is.

Second, we have his character, a tormented child who has never truly known his mother, and has to witness the death of his father. (pic) Then he discovers that he is different, not just superhuman, but royalty  the King of Atlantis, and that is a huge thing to be thrust upon a young man. And of course he finds this hard to accept, he runs, attempts to ignore all this colossal change. Perhaps this is a more realistic version of Spiderman's origins to truly feel responsible and end up pushing others away due to this, Aquaman is far more human than most.

Third, the artwork, beautiful, just the right mix of realism and fantastical, and having the sea scape brings a new look, something fresh and exciting, something that can't even be imagines in real life, the amazing doesn't have to be forced, its already there. Plus orange is a very underrated colour.
What we have here is the Batman of the seas, the Superman of the oceans, simple put one of the best heroes out there. He is Aquaman, and he is awesome.

Then there is Mera, and if you don't find Aquaman cool, then you must at least find her cool, she owns water, it is her plaything. To be able to manipulate water, to create art or death, occasionally at the same time, would be an incredible gift.

Plus she can be terrifying, always a good thing. imagine having her stare into your eyes, and know, she can pull every drop of water out of you, she can kill you without even blinking, and you wouldn't stand a chance. As she says, the lack of water isn't her weakness, its ours.
